What to know about KONE lifts

KONE was founded in Finland on 27 October 1910, and the company describes itself equally as an engineering and a service business. This shows in the equipment: components are arranged so that a technician has proper access to them and a building can be serviced for decades rather than handed over and forgotten. KONE is one of the world's Big Four manufacturers, so spare parts and documentation are predictable.

At the heart of most models is EcoDisc: a flat gearless permanent-magnet traction machine shaped like a disc. It fits into the shaft between the guide rails and the overhead slab, so a machine room is either not needed at all - KONE brought the MonoSpace concept to market back in the mid-1990s - or becomes several times smaller. High-speed models keep a small machine room, which takes up about 40% of the area a conventional traction lift requires.

Escalators and moving walks are a separate strength. In shopping centres and transport hubs they run almost non-stop from morning to night, and the difference between brands is measured not by balustrade design but by the service life of the step chain and whether the supplier will still have that chain after three years of operation.

We were frank about price even on our old website: in our conditions KONE works out expensive, so for ordinary housing we more often offer other European brands, above all IZAMET. That is still the case. KONE pays for itself where energy consumption is calculated over years of operation, and where group control or a high-rise layout with heavy passenger traffic is needed.

Quick answers

KONE: frequently asked questions

Why does KONE cost more than other European brands?

You pay not for the metal but for the drive engineering, the manufacturer's warranties and the service system. In an ordinary apartment building, that difference does not always pay off. It does pay off where the lift carries hundreds of people every day and downtime costs money: then component life and service response time matter more than the initial price.

What difference does EcoDisc make to the electricity bill?

A gearless permanent-magnet traction machine has no worm-gear losses and needs no gearbox oil. Combined with a variable frequency drive and energy regeneration, the savings compared with an old geared system are noticeable, especially in a building with heavy traffic. Only a calculation based on your passenger traffic will give a specific figure - there are no universal numbers here.

Our shaft is narrow. Can the car be made bigger?

Sometimes, yes. KONE has a counterweightless design: it frees up the strip of the shaft where the counterweight used to run, so a car about a third larger can fit within the same dimensions. This helps when replacing a lift in an old building where the shaft cannot be widened. But the design costs more and is not available in all standard sizes.

How long does it take to get a KONE spare part?

Common parts - door operators, rollers, buttons, sensors - are usually in stock or arrive quickly. Control boards and VFDs for a specific model take longer because they are ordered by factory serial number. On a high-traffic site we recommend keeping a minimum stock of spare door parts: doors are what fail most often.
